Microsoft Word Tutorial
This tutorial was done in the latest version of Microsoft Word. If you have an older version then some of the options may be located in different places. With minimal searching you should be able to get the same result.
Microsoft makes It relatively easy to setup a book, if you know where to look…
- Open Microsoft Word
- Either open your existing document or start a new project

Select File > Page Setup...
- Select appropriate paper size for your project.

- Click Ok.

Select Format > Document...

These settings are "safe" settings, but you can adjust them to your preference, keeping in mind that there should be space for the spine.
- Click OK.
- Select Format again, but now select the “Paragraph…” button

We recommend full justification for most books, but again it is a preference, Play with this as much as you like.
- Click OK.

Now Select Insert > Page Numbers...

We recommend placing the page number at the bottom center of every page.
- Click OK.
- Now you can fill these pages with your content (be sure to place pictures where you want them and the way you want them).
- Once you are done there is a way that the document must be saved, you only have to save the file this way once (when it is completely done and ready to go to print).

Select File > Save As...

Name Your document, and select Format > PDF
- If you do not have a PDF format available you can download the plugin here.
- That’s It! Your document should be ready to go to print. This file will not be editable in any way by us, therefore if something isn’t in the file we cannot place it there, be sure your book is exactly the way you want it when it is saved as a PDF.
Adobe InDesign Tutorial
Follow along with these templates That we provide for you…
There is a very good tutorial for indesign here. InDesign can be much more involved process for book creation, though with the added insight you can setup a book much more efficiently and the final product will be a stable group of files. Using InDesign is highly recommended for longer books seeing as how it breaks the file into smaller files.
If you do not have experience with InDesign then follow the tutorial and if it is still not clear you may consider using Word or a more intuitive word processing program.
Also New Hanover Printing & Publishing is happy to look at any files that you currently have and provide you with a fair quote to make them print ready. Just send us a message here.
