publishing_icons_02This is where it all starts. An author has an idea for a book and feels that they can generate enough content to sell their product. So they take the big plunge and start writing. We at New Hanover Printing & Publishing can offer some advice here to help the writer make the process as painless as possible.

We have found that by going into the writing process with a plan of action, a timeline, and expectation of yourself you can be a much more efficient writer than just jumping into it and writing what comes to mind. first consider:

  • How many hours per day can you devote to writing?
  • How many pages can you write per hour?
  • Do these add up to your target timeline?

If you are considering writing a novel then we recommend checking into Randy Ingermanson’s free online manual titled: “Writing a Novel Using The Snowflake Method.” This is a short guide that will provide any writing with some essential stepping stones toward an end result. He outlines a recipe for success with his “Snowflake Method” that has worked for many successful writers. Here is a short synopsis of what Randy goes over in his text:

  1. Take an hour and write a one-sentence summary of your story.

Plan your time. Set your goals.

  2. Take another hour and expand that sentence to a full paragraph describing the story setup, major disasters, and ending of the book.
  3. Write a short summary sheet for each character.
  4. Take several hours and expand each sentence of your summary paragraph into a full paragraph. All but the last paragraph should end in a disaster. The final paragraph should tell how the book ends.
  5. Take a day or two and write up a one-page description of each major character and a half-page description of the other important characters.
  6. Now take a week and expand the one-page plot synopsis of the story to a four-page synopsis.
  7. Take another week and expand your character descriptions into full-fledged character charts detailing everything there is to know about each character.
  8. Prep for writing the first draft: make a list of all the scenes that you’ll need to turn the story into a novel using a spreadsheet.
  9. (Optional.)Switch back to your word processor and begin writing a narrative description of the story.
  10. At this point, just sit down and start pounding out the real first draft of the story.

As a printer NHP&P further recommends that you write your on a word processor of you choice. This will prevent you from having to rewrite the whole thing or paying somebody to rewrite it for you.

When a printer receives a book they expect it to be a print ready file. To get your book ready for printing check out the “File It.” section below. It has some great tutorials for you to follow to get your book ready to go to print.

publishing_icons_06Every book that is printed needs to have a corresponding digital file that it will be printed from. Since this is so we have provided you with some helpful tips for submitting your file to us. While there are may programs out there to lay out a book with we will cover the two major ones here. If you have questions about another program please feel free to contact us here. The two main programs to be covered are Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign. The sections below help to illustrate the process by which one will setup a book for print. New Hanover Printing has two main sizes for books (though we can do many sizes):

  • 8.5″x11″
  • 5.5″x8.5″

We do many different sizes, for setup assistance on another size follow along with the tutorial (replacing the sizes that you require) and contact us if you have any further questions.

publishing_icons_14It is paramount for every writer to register their copyright with the Library of Congress. A copyright is the only thing that prevents somebody from using your words without referencing where they found them. If a writer does not register their copyright it is nearly impossible to prove authenticity in the case of plagiarism. For this reason we recommend all writers to register their copyright.

Registering a copyright can be packaged with any of our print runs at a minimal cost and effort to our customer. We provide you with all the  paper work and undertake the process for you so that you can focus on the other responsibilities of your book. If you are looking to copyright your work we also provide a package bundle with an ISBN number so that it can all be done at once… Hassle-free.

If you are looking for pricing on your package contact us.

When any writer wants to sell their published book they will be asked to provide an ISBN and then to barcode their book for sale to the public. New Hanover Printing & Publishing can provide a writer with their personal ISBN and barcode to make their book ready for sale after the first printing.
